Boone Log Cabins for Sale

Looking for a log cabin in Boone, Blowing Rock or elsewhere in the NC High Country?

One thing to know before you start searching: “cabin” can mean a lot of different things here. Some homes are true log construction, others are log-sided, and plenty simply have the wood, stone, fireplaces and mountain setting buyers associate with a classic Blue Ridge cabin.

For many buyers, the wish list starts with a stream, a mountain view, acreage or a second home they can enjoy when they’re here and potentially rent when they’re away. The trick is figuring out which of those things matters most — because finding all of them in one property can be a little like hunting for the High Country unicorn. 😄

What to Consider When Buying a Mountain Cabin

The house itself is only part of the equation in the North Carolina mountains.

Access matters. A steep or gravel driveway that seems perfectly manageable in July may feel very different in January. If you plan to use the property year-round, road maintenance, elevation and winter access deserve a closer look.

Views and streams come with tradeoffs. Long-range views often mean higher elevations and steeper terrain, while creekside cabins may require additional attention to drainage, flood considerations and property access.

Maintenance can vary considerably. True log homes have different exterior maintenance needs than conventional construction or log-sided homes, so understanding exactly what you're buying is important.

Wondering what that maintenance actually involves? We put together a practical guide to log cabin maintenance in the NC mountains, including staining and sealing, moisture, insects, chinking and some of the things buyers should look for before purchasing a log home.

Rental rules vary by property and community. If short-term rental income is part of your plan, don't assume a home can be rented simply because it looks like the perfect vacation cabin. Restrictions, HOA rules and local regulations should all be checked before you buy.

You'll also find cabins on private wells and septic systems throughout the High Country, along with properties accessed by private or shared roads. None of those things are unusual here — they're simply part of understanding mountain real estate.

Cabin, Log Home or Mountain Retreat?

You don't necessarily need true log construction to get the mountain-cabin feel.

Some buyers want the traditional look and craftsmanship of a full log home. Others prefer conventional construction with wood siding, stone fireplaces and rustic interiors because it can offer the same atmosphere with different maintenance considerations.

And sometimes what a buyer really wants isn't a “cabin” at all.

It's privacy, trees, a view, a creek, a fireplace and a porch where you can sit with your coffee and remember why you came to the mountains in the first place.

That's why we like to start with how you want to use the property rather than getting too hung up on the label.

Searching for the Right High Country Cabin

Cabin-style homes aren't limited to Boone. Depending on the setting you're after, it's worth looking throughout Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Valle Crucis, Todd, Fleetwood, West Jefferson, Sugar Mountain, Beech Mountain and the surrounding High Country.

Location can make a big difference in price, elevation, access, rental potential and how close you'll be to restaurants, skiing, hiking, the Blue Ridge Parkway or Appalachian State.

If you're still figuring out what kind of property makes sense, we've put together a deeper guide covering construction types, maintenance, access, streams, views, acreage and rental considerations.

372 Broken Arrow Trail, Boone

$819,000
3 Beds 3 Baths 264127 MLS
Situated near the top of Shores Farm II in Boone, this intentionally maintained 3-bedroom, 3-bath home of approximately 2,300 square feet has been carefully stewarded by the same owner for 22 years. The setting is high in the community, just below the ridge, with beautiful mountain views. This home is located near the end of a cul-de-sac, so it is private and low-traffic. The main level is easy, comfortable living, with ready access to the covered decks. The living room has vaulted tongue-and-groove ceilings and a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace. Originally wood-burning, the fireplace is now fitted with gas logs and can be converted back to wood-burning if desired, following proper protocols. Also on this floor are a light-filled kitchen and dining, plus two bedrooms that share a bath. The east porch is the seller’s favorite spot—and once you’re out there, you’ll see why. Upstairs, find a small loft at the landing, well suited as an office or reading retreat, then a private primary suite with electric radiant heat in the tiled bath floor. The finished lower level adds a game room or den with a gas-burning fireplace, a full bath, and a tandem two-car garage. Two fenced areas include a smaller run off the main living space, with convenient access for the pups. A separate outbuilding adds storage for outdoor equipment, so that space does not take up valuable garage room. Significant covered decking wraps the home and takes in the views. A geothermal system handles heating, cooling, humidification, and air filtration, and recovers waste heat for a portion of the hot water. A whole-house generator with transfer switch and a 500-gallon LP tank keep the house ready year-round. There is also a 50-amp connection in the basement for an electric vehicle, and an Ecobee thermostat for remote temperature control. The home is being sold fully furnished, with a few owner exceptions. This is the mountain cabin you’ve been looking for: high in the community, well kept, energy-smart, and already set up to live in or rent. Pocketed in an area close to both Boone and Blowing Rock, short-term rentals are allowed, so it works as a full-time residence, a second home, or an income-producing retreat.

Hidden on the banks of Howard’s Creek, 171 Grouse Covert Road is a rare High Country retreat where the sound of rushing water, towering trees, and exceptional craftsmanship come together on 3.78 acres with more than 575 feet of creek frontage. Just minutes from Boone and Appalachian State University, yet surrounded by the sights and sounds of the natural world, this is a property that feels wonderfully removed from the ordinary. Cross the creek and follow the drive into the woods, where a custom-built log home emerges among the trees. Crafted by a father-and-son team, the home reflects an appreciation for materials, craftsmanship, and the character of the mountains. Hand-hewn hemlock logs frame an interior accented with local wormy chestnut, cherry, and knotty alder. The result is a home with an unmistakable sense of place—warm, substantial, and deeply connected to its surroundings. Inside, the home is designed for gathering and lingering. A dramatic rock fireplace anchors the living room, while the expansive gathering room brings together the kitchen, dining area, and space to entertain. The main-level primary suite opens directly toward the outdoor living spaces, where a fireplace and patio invite evenings spent beneath the trees and beside the creek. Upstairs, two spacious bedrooms share a full bath, accompanied by a cozy office or playroom that adds flexibility for family and guests. But it may be the land that leaves the greatest impression. Howard’s Creek moves through the property with a constant, soothing rhythm, offering more than 575 feet of waterfront to explore, fish, and enjoy. For the fly fisherman, it is an extraordinary opportunity to have the creek as part of everyday life. For everyone else, it is simply a beautiful place to slow down—listening to the water from the expansive front porch, gathering around the outdoor fireplace, or wandering through the woods as the seasons change. A lower-level garage, workshop, and abundant storage provide the practicality to complement the character of the home. There is something wonderfully timeless about this property. It is not merely a home near the mountains—it is a place shaped by the creek, the forest, and the craftsmanship of the people who built it. Opportunities to own this much creek frontage, acreage, and character so convenient to Boone are exceptionally uncommon. Seller currently receives mail at the downtown Boone Post Office. Physical mail delivery is not currently available to the property.
