Why Fall in the NC High Country Is Something Special
We think we can all agree that the North Carolina High Country is beautiful in every season. But for some of us, autumn holds a particularly special place in our hearts. The mountains come alive with brilliant shades of red, orange and gold. Familiar roads become scenic adventures, and even a quick trip into town can have you reaching for your camera.

One of the nicest things about fall here is that you don't have to plan every minute. You can pick a winding road, stop for a view, linger over lunch in a mountain town, and come home with a story you never expected.
Fall colors are a journey, not a single weekend
Because elevations vary so much across the Blue Ridge, autumn color doesn't arrive everywhere at once. Leaves often begin changing higher on the mountains and continue later in sheltered valleys and the foothills. It's one of the reasons there can be a lovely view around the next bend even when another ridge has already passed its brightest moment.
Fall color timing varies with weather and elevation, so it's worth checking local conditions before setting out rather than expecting the same scene every year.
A country fair with heart in Valle Crucis
In Valle Crucis, the annual Valle Country Fair is one of those traditions that feels like a gathering of neighbors. You'll find handmade crafts, mountain music, homemade food and that irresistible scent of apple butter. First held in 1979, the fair also supports outreach and community organizations. It's a reminder that the best mountain traditions are often about people as much as the scenery.
And yes, we really race woolly worms
Over in Banner Elk, the Woolly Worm Festival brings a wonderfully quirky kind of excitement to fall. Fuzzy caterpillars race up strings, with the Saturday winner earning the honor of providing a winter-weather forecast. According to local folklore, a woolly worm's dark and rusty-brown bands hint at the weather ahead. It's not scientific, of course, but the tradition has been bringing people together for decades.
Our favorite way to enjoy it?
Take the scenic route. Leave time for an unexpected stop, pull over for the photograph, and enjoy a little of what makes living in the High Country special. We spend plenty of time driving these roads for work, and we're still finding places that make us stop and look.
